Project Statement:

The objective of this project was to propose an addition to an existing structure, the original structure was designed by Richard Meier in 1967. Keep Meier's original design in mind, students were required to design addition based on hierarchical ranking and function.

Smith House:

Contextual Analysis:

Narrative & Idea:

The Smith house, built on a one and a half acre site along the Long Island Sound has been recently purchased by Bertan Jafer also know as B Young. B young is a rapper and singer-songwriter by profession. The music artist, based on his professional needs, would like to add more to the original structure of the building designed by Richard Meier. As per the owner's request, the new design of the building should include a music studio, a family room, a master bedroom, and an outdoor terrace. The new addition should follow the function to help the artist work and enjoy private life.

Being attracted by the existing structure, the music artist would like the new addition to comply with the existing structure. Even though B young is living a single life, he is still interested in having a good number of habitable and inhabitable spaces, which could serve him and his future family for a long period.

METANARRATIVE AND OVERARCHING IDEA

The new addition would have a reveal connection between the new addition and the existing structure. The pentagon shape family room is acting like a drum crashing into a building. The proposed addition would incorporate the best circulation ideas to help the artist showcase his work and give privacy at the same time.
